Latest Additions to the Ocean Learning Library
Training Library Updates
As usual, our team has been closely monitoring industry developments to identify new topics and ensure existing titles in the Learning Library reflect recent and upcoming rules, regulations, and established best practices.
The most recent update to the Ocean Learning Library includes new material on biofouling management, self-contained breathing apparatus, and Methanol Fuel Safety.
Major revisions to existing modules also reflect the latest regulations and industry standards.
New Titles
Biofouling Management
Biofouling has spread numerous invasive species worldwide and can lead to unnecessary fuel consumption. This new module explains the importance of managing anti-fouling measures correctly to avoid environmental harm, comply with strict port regulations and reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus
A fire at sea is one of the most dangerous situations a seafarer can face. In the event of fighting a fire on board or rescuing someone from a hazardous environment, a self-contained breathing apparatus is a lifeline. This new module focuses on the use and maintenance of self-contained breathing apparatuses, helping to ensure that if emergencies involving hazardous atmospheres arise, the crew have the right knowledge and correctly maintained equipment to handle the situation safely.
Methanol Fuel Safety
Expanding our selection of titles on new marine fuels and following the release of our title on ammonia fuel safety, we have developed a new module addressing methanol as a fuel. As methanol gains popularity as an alternative fuel, this title familiarises learners with the properties of methanol and the necessary precautions to safely store and use it as a fuel.
Major Updates and Revisions
Introduction to MARPOL
Updated to reflect changes in requirements, including the Mediterranean Sea becoming a Sulphur Emission Control Area (SECA) in 2025. This revision ensures compliance with the latest environmental standards.
MARPOL Annex VI, Part 3 – Controlling SOx Emissions
This module has been updated to address the latest requirements for controlling SOx emissions, with a specific focus on the SECA regulations in the Mediterranean Sea.
An Introduction to Fuel Oil Bunkering (Edition 2)
Updated to reflect changes in requirements, focusing on SECA regulations in the Mediterranean Sea.
Practical Management and Switching of Marine Fuels (Edition 2)
Revised to include updated practices and regulations for managing and switching marine fuels in compliance with SECA standards.
Low Sulphur Fuel Operation
Revised to incorporate the latest operational practices required to comply with the SECA regulations in the Mediterranean Sea.
Additional Revisions
Garbage Management – MARPOL Annex V (Edition 3)
Updated to reflect new amendments to MARPOL Annex V entering into force on 1st May 2024, requiring ships of 100 gross tonnage and above to be provided with a Garbage Record Book.
Boiler Furnace Explosions
Updated to reflect changes in requirements, with a focus on operational safety and compliance with SECA regulations in the Mediterranean Sea.
Marine Environmental Awareness, Sustainable Shipping
This module has been updated to include the latest regulatory changes, focusing on sustainable shipping practices in response to the Mediterranean Sea due to become a SECA.
Marine Fuels, Environmental and Health Hazards
Reflecting updated requirements, this module addresses the environmental and health hazards associated with marine fuels, with a focus on the upcoming SECA regulations.
