Latest additions to the Ocean Learning Library

Training library updates Q1 2023

As usual our Ocean Learning team have been keeping a close watch on Industry developments to identify new topics and ensuring existing titles on our library are up to date all with the aim of making sure your training needs are covered.

In the most recent update to the Ocean Learning Library, there is important new material on Sustainability, and how it can relate to various aspects of the shipping industry, including ESG, a vital new title on the New Fuels to help industry transit towards zero-emissions as well as new partner material focusing on how to operate the Navi-Sailor 4000 ECDIS system safely.

This update also includes new titles on how  bulk carriers can accommodate container loads, potentially making the voyage more profitable and another for RORo vessels on how to recognise and minimise a risk of the Electric Vehicles fires.

We have also added Spanish language translations to provide learner support to key titles on Ship General Safety, Human relations and Piracy and armed robbery.

Get Ready for ESG

The dramatic growth in the maritime sector has also brought out some concerns about its environmental, social & economic impacts, such as land, sea & oil pollution energy consumption and all-round good governance. ESG also includes a strong focus on social responsibilities affecting seafarers & land workers in terms of health & safety, workplace culture, the employee experience and well-being.

There are strong incentives for ship owners and operators to measure and report their ESG focussed KPIs and there are few areas of ship and office operations that will not be impacted by a focus on ESG performance. With this in mind is important to ensure your employees understand ESG and the role they can play in your success.

New Title!

This e-learning module will provide an overall understanding of the term ‘Sustainability’, and how it can relate to various aspects of the shipping industry, including ESG (Environment, Society and Governance).

New Title!
Introduction to new fuel types

To take the maritime industry to zero-emissions and to fulfil the IMO goals we need a new generation of fuels. Fuels that result in vessels producing very low or no GHG emissions from well to wake.  Although much information about possible alternative fuels exists, this information is not always readily accessible and in a format suitable for those serving onboard ship.

#0684 Introduction to new fuel types

This e-learning module will guide learners through the current possibilities for new more environmentally friendly fuels which can replace existing hydrocarbon based fuels, and will explain why the change is essential for their company the industry and our planet.

New Title!
Electric Vehicle fires on RORO ships

As more electric vehicles are being manufactured and shipped, the instances and severity of fires on car carriers and RORO vessels has gone up in tandem and the shipping industry is having to devise the ways to deal with uncertainty over the potential fire risks of transporting these vehicles, and the unfamiliarity with any associated fire characteristics.

#0455 RORO, Electric Vehicle fires

This new e-learning title will provide a better understanding of why electric vehicles can catch fire and why such fires are difficult to put out. It teaches that prevention is currently the best course of action.

New Title!
Carriage of containers on bulk carriers

Due to the increased congestion in the container shipping market on land and at sea, an opportunity has emerged for ship owners who are willing to modify their vessels to accommodate container loads. By taking on even a small number of containers, owners can go from a zero/low revenue on a ballast leg or part loaded leg to earning significant returns.

#0328 Carriage of containers on bulk carriers

This module will introduce stowage of containers, securing and lashing equipment, loading, discharging of containers, how to carry out tests and checks to ensure container safety during the voyage. The module also introduces the use of additional firefighting equipment required to fight container fires.
