Manual Handling Techniques (Edition 2)
Award of Video Excellence
Communicator Awards 2021
This excellent video is available as part of the Ocean Learning Library to help prepare marine professionals to work safely and look after their physical wellbeing from the point of view of those who are to undertake a manual handling/lifting task and of those responsible for overseeing the task.
About the Programme
Every day at work, plenty of activities, including lifting, pulling and pushing, carrying or moving by hand or bodily force are being performed. Actions that we learn and perform in our everyday life from the moment we first stand and walk.
Our body works hard to carry out those activities. Especially our back.
But unless we prepare properly before undertaking any manual handling and then do it correctly, we could suffer serious injuries.
The Manual Handling training package is intended for all seafarers on all types of vessel. It approaches the topic of manual handling both from the point of view of those who are to undertake a manual handling/lifting task and of those responsible for overseeing the task.
After completing the training, participants will be able to:
- identify how manual handling activities can hurt the musculoskeletal system or cause other types of injury
- outline in broad terms how the human back works
- describe how to prepare for, and informally assess the risks of, a manual handling/lifting task
- explain how to protect against injury while carrying out the task
- describe what to do if something goes wrong

This excellent video is available as part of the Ocean Learning Library to help seafarers achieve a healthy balance between the virtual and real world by outlining three key principles.
About the Programme
Excessive use of the internet may also result in less socialising with colleagues which can heighten feelings of isolation and loneliness.
This film helps seafarers achieve a healthy balance between the virtual and real world by outlining three key principles:
1) Respect for self and others
2) Safe and responsible use
3) Managing non-work screen time
The programme follows the guidance published by Intertanko and gives tips on how to achieve each of these principles and identifies the risks that can occur through overuse of smart phones, tablets, laptops and social media.
At a little under 8 minutes running time, it has been produced with a millennial audience in mind using production techniques designed to engage this target audience.
